National Day of Service 2011

National CASA Honors Martin Luther King Jr.

Next Monday will be the 25th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday. As we honor King, and as some of our programs recognize the day by participating in the National Day of Service, we should use this holiday as an opportunity to reflect on the service that we provide as CASA staff. CASA volunteers are fulfilling a sacred obligation by making sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s best interest—when and where it matters most. Our service ensures that children will be able to fulfill their destiny, to learn and to thrive.

Please take a moment to read and to share the following pieces added to the National CASA website website in recognition of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday:

• We asked staff and volunteers to share their thoughts about King’s legacy and how his work connects with that of CASA volunteers. Those messages are posted online, and the page is also linked from the home page of our website.

• In our Working with Volunteers section, read about how CASA of Monterey County is using the holiday as a opportunity for volunteer recruitment.

• A new editorial by Judge Glenda Hatchett can be found on our News & Events page, along with a note of our partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service in commemorating the National Day of Service. Judge Hatchett will also be making a number of appearances on local and national radio programs, including the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Show, to promote CASA’s mission and its significance in relation to King’s legacy.
